Settlers' Hill Cottages consists of a group of cottages where both bed & breakfast and self-catering accommodation is offered in a homely setting. These quaint historic cottages were built by early British Settlers between 1820 and 1827 in Artificers Square after failed farming ventures drove them to town to ply their trades near the military post. In addition to the many attraction in town such as the Camera Obscura, Coelecanth, Umthathi Township Tour and Xhosa meal, there are excellent malaria-free game reserves nearby. Tom, the rhino with the world record breaking horn, lives 10 minutes from the town, the stripiest zebras and the tallest giraffes can be seen at Nyathi camp, and you can almost touch an elephant at Addo Elephant Park which is only an hour's drive away. SHEBLON COTTAGEThe gem of this group of cottages is this quaint thatched cottage with it's low ceilings, yellow wood floors and sash windows which was built in 1823 by Samuel Jeffries and his wife Mary. It is a national monument tucked away in a quiet lane. It is also listed with AA travel Guides. A double and single room can accommodate up to 3 visitors. Modern day comforts provided include a microwave, electric blankets, and TV. There is a pretty walled garden with many scented indigenous plants and flowers. JASMINE COTTAGEStanding on the veranda of this central cottage, one can see the Cathedral. There are four bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. It has a cosy walled garden draped with red Bougainvillea, white Jasmine and Mandavilla flowers. There is an outdoor barbecue area for having a typical South African braai, cooking ostrich and kudu steaks from nearby Connocks butchery. There is a comfortable TV lounge for relaxing in as well as a spacious dining room where the studious can prepare lectures or read. Groups of up to 10 people can easily be accommodated in this spacious house. It is very close to Rhodes University, Town and many attractions. BELLHAMBRA COTTAGEWith every room on a different level one has to be very sober to stay here! The floors are original Oregon with one bedroom having original yellowwood floors. There are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 lounges, 2 kitchens, all interleading or as two separate units. From the brass bed in the main bedroom you look onto a colourful garden. There are some unusual treasures in this cottage. OLIVE COTTAGEAdjacent to Bellhambra and with linked gardens this cottage has 3 bedrooms, a lounge, dining room, bathroom with shower over the Victorian bath, a second toilet and a small kitchen. The furniture is also antique in the Cape Country style and mostly collected at local auctions. The garden has mostly indigenous plants and flowers. SETTLERS HILL MANORThis gracious Victorian Manor House built in the 1860's has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, 2 lounges and gleaming yellowwood floors. The wrap-around verandah gives it a relaxed colonial feel. The furniture is all original antique oak, yellowwood and teak. The ambience is a relaxed country style.
