For something completely different, dine or conference aboard the beautiful Museum Ship, CS Cable Restorer, which houses the unique Roaring Forties Floating Functions Restaurant and Conference Venue, permanently docked in historic, picturesque Simons Town, with her original maritime charm, brass fittings and teak decks, this is a charming and unique venue for any occasion. “Romantic Dining at Sea floats my boat” Gwen Gill, Sunday Times The Roaring Forties Floating Functions restaurant is suited to Weddings, Conferences, Incentive Tour Meals, Schedule Tour Meals, 21st and other Birthdays, Team Building, Product Launches, RAP Parties, Year-End Parties and other special occasions. FUNCTION AND WEDDING VENUEOur functions venue is located on the forward deck of this beautiful Museum Ship. We have windows along both sides boasting a beautiful sea view from all tables. These tables are round and depending on the table size can seat between 4 and 12 guests. Our décor is nautical but elegant, with navy blue table cloths and Long Island striped overlays. We also hire out our white linen and chair covers for functions but for weddings they are already included in the venue hire. We have a beautiful outside deck adjoining the functions/conferencing area, here we have benches and umbrellas for the hot summer days. This area is lovely for pre-dinner / arrival drinks as well as being a great spot to take photographs with Simons Town as your backdrop. Weather permitting this area also makes a great breakaway spot. Function Seating Capacity: Maximum of 124 guests seated, larger numbers of guests are welcome for standing functions with finger foods. Conference Seating Capacity: Main Venue: Maximum 92 delegates Officers Mess: Maximum 20 delegates Breakaway Rooms: 3 + Cape Town Weddings: We cater for Champagne Breakfasts, Brunches, Dinners and can accommodate your wedding ceremony too. Being on a museum ship we also have wonderful spots for your photos to be taken. Catering and Menus: We offer Set Menus, Buffets and various Carvery options as well as Cocktail Parties, Wedding Cakes and Outside Catering to the venue of your choice. Services: We offer assistance with planning your function as well as providing staff to set up, clear and serve your function. Bar Facilities: We have a fully licensed bar and offer a small selection of wines and cocktails. Function organizers are welcome to bring wine and champagne and pay corkage. We can run a tab for your function or a cash bar. Non-Exclusive Daytime Functions: We do not charge a venue hire as long as there is another non-exclusive function on that day or if not you should have a minimum of 20 guests and be willing to share the venue. Smaller parties are welcome for lunches on days that are not exclusively booked. Most Sundays are open and we can therefore accommodate small parties of 2 or more for lunches. Booking two days in advance for a Sunday is essential. HISTORYThe CS Cable Restorer (Museum Ship) is a cable repair ship built for the Royal Navy in England, launched in 1944 as HMS Bullfrog. She was used in the laying and maintaining of ASDIC (Anti-Submarine Detection Committee) loops. In 1946 she was bought by the Cable & Wireless Company and renamed Retriever. The Commercial Company bought her in 1961 and named her Cable Restorer. In July 1972 her registry was changed from British to South African when she was purchased by the South Atlantic Cable Company. She used Simons Town as her home port, while looking after and repairing South Africa’s first undersea cable, which was laid in 1968. With the installation of the new fibre optic undersea cable connecting South Africa to Europe and the USA, the Cable Restorer became redundant and was to be scrapped. She was granted reprieve in 1993 however, when she was donated to the Simons Town Museum. From 1995 to 1999 she was home to 200 maritime students from Simons Town High School and is presently the venue of the unique “Roaring Forties” created to generate funds to help with the upkeep of the CS Cable Restorer. |
