We recently had the pleasure of staying at Palms Wilderness Retreat. Wayne and Vicky are truly hospitable, nothing was too much trouble for them. Everything from food to accommodation was first class and we cannot recommend this establishment highly enough. |

Staying with Vicky and Wayne at their beautiful guest house was one of the highlights of our visit to South Africa.
Their hospitality, friendly natures and the fantastic food served to us made our stay with them so memorable. |

Review by: Claire Garner, Wirral (stayed: February 2008)
My husband and I spent two nights in The Palms in Wilderness in February and we can say without hesitation that this truly is a gem in the Garden Route.
Where Wilderness itself is a little unspectacular (An opinion which is possibly tainted somewhat by the grey and rainy weather) – It does sit in a perfect position to take your pick from a plethora of outing possibilities. Your only problem may be that there is so much to choose from.
The Palms itself is in no way unspectacular. It is truly a little oasis… Nestled in lush gardens the rooms are secluded and private and finished with a combination of cool African chic and attention to detail which begs the question as to how a fifth star is missing from their official ratings. But this is not pretentious chic, this is natural, comfortable-in-its-own-skin chic. Somehow the proprietors have managed to create something that oozes luxury without being in the least bit showy. (The only conclusion we came to about the 5th star is that there are no TVs actually in the rooms and instead if you REALLY want to watch TV you had to walk to a resident’s lounge – but come on, really – if you come to the Garden Route to watch TV, shame on you!)
When you go there, DO NOT miss out on at least one trip to their in-house restaurant for the set dinner. It appears that unpretentious chic is this place’s hallmark, and this is reflected in the restaurant and the food. Eaten in the ambient surroundings of the small terrace, we were first treated to a complimentary white port and had time to look at the choice of 2 starters, mains and sweets. The emphasis is on fresh, seasonal produce, cooked to perfection. The staff were both knowledgeable and friendly and the food & wine were so beautiful that we cancelled our plans for the next night to return for the next days selections. The menu changes every day and even though you only get two choices, the food reflects that rare quality of creativity only achieved by a menu shaped by the produce, not the other way round.
I would defy anyone not to have a fantastic time at The Palms in Wilderness. Everything was set to make out stay truly memorable. We stayed 8 nights in all around the Garden Route and Wine Region and The Palms stands out from the rest as being the best all round value. I cannot be too evangelical about the place. My only suggestion is to make sure you don’t stay any less than two nights! (and maybe we’ll see you there!) |
