Cresting the final ridge at Springerbaai, a welcome uncluttered vista opened up with vivid red Aloe flowers dotting the fynbos down to the beach. Ocean View Cottage is perched on a valley slope and boasts commanding views of the beach and ocean. Staying at Ocean View Cottage was the perfect digital detox. Solar powered and off the grid, there was no buzz of civilization to distract us and at night the lack of light pollution aided our star gazing. The accommodation is ideal for a cosy family getaway with easy access to the beach and some pleasant rural road mountain biking routes to Fransmanshoek. If you are looking for peace and quiet living off the grid, Ocean View Cottages is one of the most aesthetic venues along this section of the Southern Cape Coastline.
Our experience of Ocean View Cottage started with an undulating dirt road after entering Eden Eco Village. The road provides you with your first few glimpses of sea views and plenty of game and bird viewing opportunities. You will be well advised to have the camera ready even at this stage!
Directions within the estate are easy to follow and all sign posts are clearly marked. One motor vehicle garage is available with a door leading into the scullery (handy for those rainy days).
Estate houses are very far spaced and well positioned, as such adjacent houses never intrude on your privacy whilst in and around the cottage. We found the cottage to be well appointed with a very personal touch, giving it a homely feel, something likely to take the edge off long stays.
Views from the cottage are wide and open, giving you a pleasant view of Vlees bay and the coastal fynbos adjacent to the beach. Access to the beach is provided by a series of boardwalks and entrances reachable by foot but probably more suitable for vehicle to a View Point/Entrance with ample parking (undercover) and ablution facilities.
The beach itself is unspoilt and gives you the sense of space required to have a well deserve rest from urban life. The estate houses are not visible from the beach, tranquillity is thus guaranteed.
We were two families (with kids) staying at the cottage. The layout of two sleeping rooms with on suite bathrooms, situated at opposite sides of the cottage, with a family room/kitchen in the centre and a loft running the length of the cottage made for perfect staying. All the kids immediately invaded the loft and could only be enticed with food, trips to the beach or playing outside to come down. The double volume above the family room made keeping an eye on them hassle free.
The family room is well furnished with a choice of comfortable chairs and sofas. A large family table completes the picture. Of particular note is the fireplace running the length of the room – creating both atmosphere and warmth. It also made “braai-time” an easy and all involved affair. The kitchen is well equipped and come with all the utensils needed.
Although we stayed as two family groups, I could well imagine an adult couple looking for tranquillity spaced with nature walks and wildlife viewing (in particular birds!), could spend a few weeks at the cottage.
The cottage and location comes well recommended!
