The Old Hatchery offers affordable accommodation on a trout farm, set in a tranquil country setting just 10km from Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg. Located near horse riding trails, mountain biking trails, hiking routes, golf courses, trout fishing waters and of course the infamous Sani Pass. Sleeping 30 people, this is the ideal location for a big gathering of friends or family, be sure to book well in advance.

Bed & Breakfast accommodation

Our B&B unit and has a large lounge upstairs with little reading corners and a patio out front where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the Berg.

Oak Tree Lodge:
There are 6 double en-suite bedrooms. This is what each room has:
• Bath and separate shower
• TV with DSTV channels
• Temperature control (air-con OR floor heating)
• Tea & Coffee in room

Breakfasts are served in the restaurant

Self Catering Accommodation

We have 5 self-catering houses accommodating 24 people in total:



Please bring the following with you when you take the self-catering option:
• Firewood & firelighters
• Tea, coffee, milk sugar and all other foods
• DSTV decoder if your chosen unit has a TV

These units are serviced before arrival and on departure. Should you wish the unit to be serviced during your stay, it will cost an extra R20 per bedroom per day. We have gas heaters on site and you can arrange to hire gas bottles from us.

Otter’s Den:
Four en suite bedrooms. Three double rooms and one twin room + an extra sleeper couch. This cottage is a popular choice for families and small groups of couples wanting some time away in the Berg. The kitchen comes fully equipped with all cutlery & crockery etc. There is a TV in the Lounge but please bring your own DSTV decoder.

Fishing Cabins:
We have 3 of these delightful little cabins that are suitable for couples. Each of them has a fireplace, bathroom, kitchenette and braai facilities. From the parking area, you walk along the wooden decking and over our gorgeous little waterfall to get to the cabins. No TV’s in these units

Dragonfly Cottage:
This 3 bedroom unit has one double en-suite bedroom and 2 twin rooms with full self-catering facilities and braai area. There is an extra little room off the lounge with double bunk / sleeper couch for children. From the parking area, you walk along the wooden decking and over our gorgeous little waterfall to get to the cabins. There is a TV in this unit but please bring your own DSTV decoder.

Restaurant

All breakfasts for our B&B guests are catered for in the restaurant which overlooks the waterfall and trout dam, offering spectacular sunset views for those before dinner drinks. The restaurant is available to the public and for function hire, ie birthday celebrations, weddings, etc

Fishing

We are corporate members of our local fly fishing club and this allows our guests to fish still and river waters that would not normally be available to day visitors in the Underberg area.

Notice how it's all about the outdoors. We don't have TV's in all of our units, we want you to hear the sound of the water flowing and the jackals talking to each other at night.

location

We are situated one hour from Howick on the N3, one hour from Kokstad, making Underberg the ideal location from which to explore the majestic mountains of the Southern Drakensberg. We are on the route between Johannesburg and seaside resorts of the KwaZulu Natal South Coast and The Wild Coast making this the ideal location to stop over for the night. Our nearest airport is King Shaka International Airport (3 hours drive) and there is a daily shuttle service from Underberg available on request.
