Mafube Mountain Retreat is a little slice of heaven. Set in an amphitheatre of colorful sandstone cliffs, with stunning views from every window, it is the perfect place for a bit of soul therapy. It is a wonderful place to clear your head and experience the peace and tranquility of unspoiled Africa.

Mafube Mountain Retreat is situated on a 465 hectare farm in the Eastern Free State Highlands which is one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa. It is a place to escape the crowds and hassles of city life. It is a place to bring the children in the holidays, away from the shopping malls, and the barrage television and computers.

Explore the hiking trails and mountain paths. Visit the waterfalls, pools and caves, bird watch, fish or canoe: or simply unwind, in a place where the silence sings. We are only a 20 minute drive from the popular tourist village of Clarens, where there are many good restaurants, shops and art galleries. The town also has an 18 hole golf course.

We are half an hour from Golden Gate National Park and only few kilometers away from the border post of the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Lesotho’s spectacular Katse Dam is in easy reach and in winter many of our guests take a day to visit Afriski which is only 80km from Fouriesburg. The Fouriesburg area is well known for its Adventure tourism, including quad biking, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, 4x4 trails river rafting and horse riding.

Self Catering Accommodation

We have only three self catering units. This ensures that your stay is peaceful and relaxed. All our units are serviced daily and supplied with high quality bed linen and towels which are changed twice a week. In order to give you a real rest, guests are able to put their dirty dishes outside the units in order to be collected and washed by the staff.

The Contemporary Chalet (sleeps 6)
The Chalet is 3 bed-roomed and has been built high up against the mountain with wonderful views from every window. It has been designed to be warm in winter, with a wood burning stove for heating, for which we supply the wood in winter. Two sets of French doors open from the veranda into the large open plan living area which has extra long windows on three sides to allow for unimpeded views of the mountains. The lounge area has two large comfortable leather couches and an armchair. There are Venetian blinds on the windows, to allow for sun control without blocking the view.

There is a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, with fridge, gas hob, and an electric Solardom convection / microwave oven. Pots, pans, crockery and cutlery and cooking utensils are all supplied. It has its own private braai area.

There are three bright bedrooms. One has a queen size bed, one has twin beds and the third has bunk beds. There are built in cupboards in the first two bedrooms and a chest of drawers in the third. The bathroom consists of a large shower, a toilet and a basin. In addition the cottage has a private hot water outdoor shower where you can enjoy the stars with the mountains towering around you!

The Rondawel (sleeps 2 to 5)
The Rondawel is budget friendly, and has a wonderful traditional African ambience with the thatch roof providing insulation from the cold of winter and the heat of summer. It is open plan and suitable for couples, young families or groups of friends. There is a spacious open-plan living and sleeping area on the ground level, with a King-sized bed as well as a sitting area, and a dining/kitchen area.

The kitchenette is equipped with a fridge, electric kettle, cutlery and crockery, a two plate gas hob and small oven / grill, and a microwave oven. Serving dishes and cooking utensils are also supplied. It has its own private braai / bonfire facilities and a small veranda with views of the amphitheatre. The en-suite bathroom consists of a bath/shower, a toilet and a basin.

Accessible by a rustic built in wooden ladder, the loft area sleeps up to three additional people. In winter we supply a gas heater, an electric oil heater, hot water bottles and extra fluffy blankets to keep you snug and warm.

Garden Unit (sleeps 2)
This small unit is presently being changed into a mini chalet, and will be available shortly. It is ideal for couples. It has a north facing bedroom with king size / twin beds. The living area has a small kitchenette with crockery and cutlery and all that you need to cook simple meals. It has a veranda with outdoor furniture, and wonderful views to the west and the north. It has its own braai and bonfire facilities. The private bathroom has a shower, a toilet and a basin.
