Madi a Thavha, meaning “water from the mountains”, is set in a beautiful and quiet valley of the Soutpansberg mountains, only 10 km drive from the centre of Louis Trichardt. At Madi a Thavha you find together all what the area has to offer, a permanent exhibition of the art and craft work of the Venda and Tsonga artists, numerous bird species, walking routes, and the textile workshop of Madi a Thavha Design. The lodge is an excellent base to spend a few days to explore the Venda and Tsonga culture by visiting the artists and crafters in the villages around Elim and Mutale and to discover unspoiled nature and culture of the people of the Soutpansberg and Limpopo valley. Madi a Thavha is a nice stop over when traveling to the Northern part of the Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe World Heritage site, the bush camps at Tuli Block in Botswana or the Victoria falls in Zimbabwe. Madi a Thavha is a fair trade in tourism South Africa (FTTSA) certified accommodation. AccommodationMadi a Thavha provides bed and breakfast, full boarding, and self catering services for up to 16 people. The accommodation consists of guest rooms and guest houses with self catering facilities. Guest houses and rooms are located in or around the original farm house, all with mountain view and terrace or veranda and own entrance. Kitchens are fully equipped with a fridge, stove, oven and microwave. The following accommodations are available: • 2 Guest rooms with bath rooms en suite in the farm house (2 beds) • 2 Self catering small guest houses (2 and 3 beds) • 1 large self catering family guest house with 2 bed rooms and bath rooms en suite (5 beds) • 1 self catering wooden cottage with 2 bed rooms and bath room (4 beds) FacilitiesThe farm house includes a lounge with a fire place and DSTV, dining room, open plan kitchen, reception with telephone and Internet facilities, craft shop, veranda’s, a refreshing swimming pool and garden. Everything is tastefully decorated with Venda and Tsonga arts and crafts, made by people in the villages around Madi a Thavha mountain farm lodge. In the garden is a refreshing swimming pool and lapa to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. An exhibition of Venda and Tsonga arts and crafts is incorporated in the interior, veranda’s, lapa and garden of the farm house and displayed in the art and craft shop. All design is inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Venda and Tsonga people of the area. Breakfast and DiningWe serve breakfast and dinner on the verandah of the farm house. During winter evenings the verandah is comfortably warm with the traditional Venda stoves and using a traditional blanket. When it is too cold outside we serve the meals in dining room of the farm house. We offer a three course dinner, including coffee or tea with a set menu in the evenings. Fresh vegetables and a salad are always included. Breakfast is an exclusive and varied buffet of yoghurts, fruits, muesli’s, baked muesli or pan cakes, bread, toast, muffins, cheese and various eggs dishes. Lunches and pick-nick baskets can be provided. ActivitiesDuring your stay at Madi a Thavha mountain farm lodge you can explore the area or enjoy yourself through one of the activities on the farm itself. There are walking routes on the farm and excellent opportunities for biding. The farm environment offers various opportunities for activities for families with children. You can join one of the organised tour programmes or develop your own route. Various workshops and cultural performances can be organised by the artists and crafters in the villages and other experts. There are routes and tour programmes focussing on arts and culture, history and nature. • The Ribolla route, around Elim is the most developed Art and Culture Route, but also on the Land of Legend route and the Blouberg route many natural wonders, cultural places, workshops of artists and crafters and community projects can be found. • You can spend a day with Charles Leech as a guide and follow the Zoutpansberg Skirmishes Route that lead you to historical places of the Anglo-Boer War. • In the Soutpansberg - Limpopo birding area you can follow different birding routes, using Madi a Thavha as your base camp. Nice birding spots are Blouberg Nature Reserve, Hanglip Picnic Spot, Albasini dam and Roodewal. Specialised maps with places to visit well marked, including GPS are available at Madi a Thavha. We recommend making use of a qualified tour guide, because the signs are sometimes poor. Madi a Thavha mountain farm lodge offers organised tour programmes, a qualified tour guide is available to join you in your own car, or Madi a Thavha can provide the transport (normal car or 4 x 4). We also organise guided walking and mountain bike tours. The itineraries and programmes of the tour programmes are flexible and based on the interests of the guests. Fair tradeOur business approach is in line with the principles of Fair trade in Tourism in order to achieve positive, social, cultural and environmental impact.
