Award-winning Lupus Den Country House, owner-managed by Priscilla and Noel Walton is situated on a fourth generation working citrus and cattle farm in the lush Sundays River Valley - a mere twenty minute drive from the famous Addo Elephant Park. The farm, a green oasis of highly productive citrus orchards, has been in the Walton family since 1894.

Our guesthouse, established in 2004, is a peaceful four-star country retreat rated “Superior” by AA Travel Guides. We pride ourselves in offering our guests a warm welcome and friendly, upmarket service at affordable rates in a “home from home” atmosphere.

Set in a tranquil, tree-filled garden with a large, inviting swimming pool, Lupus Den has a range of accommodation to suit all pockets, in six tastefully furnished, air-conditioned en suite bedrooms. Each bedroom has an overhead fan, tea / coffee facilities, hair-dryer and toiletries.

Our homestead offers three cosy bedrooms, one of which has its own private garden entrance and patio while our Garden Cottage, nestled between the garden and orange groves, offers another three luxurious bedrooms. These bedrooms each have their own secluded patio overlooking the garden, pool or orange trees. Our guests’ privacy is assured as there are no inter-leading doors between the rooms. Each spacious bedroom boasts ‘the biggest bed in the world’ - an oft repeated comment from our guests! This converts to two beds, when necessary.

The comfortable lounge area has double doors opening onto the patio. The en suite bathrooms have both a bath tub and double walk-in shower. Two of the cottage bedrooms (Kingfisher and Hoopoe) have double, open-air showers as well.

Facilities

When not game-viewing, guests can soak up the sun on wooden loungers by the pool or enjoy a quiet walk through the orchards. Lupus Den also offers guests an opportunity to view the hustle and bustle of an intensive citrus and beef farming enterprise. When convenient and on request, Noel will do a guided tour of the farm.

Breakfast and Dining

We provide simple lunches and elegant set, 3-course home-cooked dinners to our guests, on request. We are prepared to cater for food allergies and any specific dietery requirements, but do need to know about these requirements before the arrival of our guests. Substantial breakfasts are served in our comfortable living room. After a busy day, guests can enjoy a leisurely candlelit dinner served on the patio overlooking the pool, protected at night from all weathers by stack-away doors.

A blazing log fire in the living room, on chilly winter evenings, adds to the ambience. In addition to these entertainment areas, we have a cosy, comfortable lounge where guests are welcome to relax over a glass of wine.

Awards

Over the years our guesthouse has been fortunate to win numerous awards including the AA Travel award for ‘Fabulous Food’ in 2006 / 07 and the AA Travel Accommodation Award for three consecutive years (2008 / 09, 2009 / 10 and 2010 / 11) making us eligible for their Hall of Fame.

In 2010, we were awarded our local tourism forum’s ‘Golden Tusk’ award for our contribution to tourism in the Greater Addo area. We have also been awarded a Certificate of Excellence for 2010 / 11 by the Tripadvisor website for consistently highly rated guest reviews. We are currently (July 2011) rated #1 out of 309 Bed & Breakfasts in the Eastern Cape by Tripadvisor.
