About Gaikou Lodge
At Gaikou Lodge, you’re invited to enjoy world-class accommodation and service at a venue tucked in at the foot of a magnificent mountain kloof, set on 16 hectares of sheer beauty.
The Verder family of the 5 Star Mardouw Country House are the visionary hoteliers who spotted this unique setting on which to develop Gaikou, a one-of-a-kind venue for their lodge. Gaikou Lodge is infused with modern, cosmopolitan flair while at the same time honouring the architectural traditions of the Southern Cape.
The luxury suites are all open plan with high ceilings, allowing for ultimate comfort in an air-conditioned / heated environment. The beds are dressed in the finest linens, the oval baths spell supreme indulgence, and there are fine toiletries for the use of guests.
Each suite has a flat-screen TV and internet access is available. The sophisticated toffee and cream furnishings create an ambience of calm, perfectly reflecting the natural surroundings. You can choose between a single unit that accommodates two people or a double that accommodates two couples or a family. In the double unit, each bedroom is of course en-suite.
Gaikou is the perfect venue for your special day. You could not hope for a more romantic setting than Gaikou’s tranquil environment set amongst green lawns and mountain vistas. The spacious airy veranda and stylish reception area with facilities for guests and fully equipped kitchen will provide elegantly for the wedding banquet. And you can book the entire facility for your honeymoon night and for your guests. They will be there in the morning to wave you off on your honeymoon; or you could wave them off and linger on at Gaikou in select privacy to enjoy the first days of your marriage!
Gaikou has it all for your business conference: a spacious reception area for seminars and discussions, the wide veranda for al-fresco breakfasts and lunches, and overnight accommodation for the entire team - delegates and speakers. The veranda is also the place for a casual braai or gala evening finale. The fully equipped reception area provides for hi-tech link-ups for your speakers, powerpoint and DVD deliveries. In addition, the setting for team-building exercises could not be better, with mountain hikes, horse riding and fishing opportunities either on the property or adjoining it. For additional recreation Swellendam’s 9-hole golf course is within easy reach.
Activities and Attractions
When you are able to tear yourself away from the lodge, we will be ready to direct you to the best attractions in the area, which include the Drostdy Museum, Bontebok National Park, the famous church that lost its spire, other special spots in the historic town of Swellendam (the third oldest in South Africa), and the nine-hole golf course.
Easy day excursions are to Cape Agulhas, the southern-most tip of Africa and site of numerous ship wrecks, and De Hoop Nature Reserve, where you can view game and explore the golden seashore. A day trip to Witsand via Malgas on the Breede River offers an opportunity to cross the river on the only man-powered pont in the country! There is much to see in this historic and scenic part of the Southern Cape and you will be well-placed to continue your travels either towards Cape Town or up the Garden Route.
