Elbow's Rest, is situated in the vibrant village of Hilton, at the gateway to the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. This historic area was developed on the crest of the plateau overlooking the capital city of the province, Pietermaritzburg. The generous rainfall and mist are responsible for the verdant growth and the surrounding forests, which are such a feature of this region. The overall climate with its sunny days, winter and summer and the cool winters gives Hilton the reputation has having one of the healthiest climates in the country.
Our three self catering units are set apart from the main Cotswold design house. Each one has its own entrance, giving our guests the maximum privacy and space. The furnishings and fittings are tasteful and comfortable. Each unit has its own small braai patio and fenced garden. We welcome dogs with loving owners.
unit 1:
Our Unit No. 1 has a king sized bed downstairs and two single beds upstairs in a small loft, making this a popular family unit. Its furnishings have a butterfly theme. There is a bathroom en-suite.
unit 2:
Unit No 2 has a lavender theme. There are twin beds with an option of a third single bed. There is a shower en suite.
unit 3:
Unit No 3 has twin beds and a ¾ size bed option. It has a view of the Hilton canopy which is a real feature. There is a shower/bath en suite.
All three units have built in kitchens each with its own microwave, four plate cooker top, small fridge, dining area, toaster, kettle and well supplied cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery. Those who choose self catering as an option will not be disappointed with our facilities.
Each unit is supplied with its own linen and towels. There are panel heaters and electric blankets for the cold Hilton winters. Electric fans can cool the occasional hot days. Each unit has its own TV and has its own DStv Hospitality Bouquet.
The units are serviced daily, except on Sundays and some public holidays. There is a laundry on site. Arrangements can be made for private laundry to be done at a small charge.
The property is well fenced and parking is on site, covered and the access is through the remote controlled security gate. Our own neighbourhood “Bobbies on the Beat” is an added feature of the area. Children are always welcome.
Pietermaritzburg and The Midlands play host to many local sporting events during the year – such as the Dusi Canoe Marathon, Comrades Marathon, international and national mountain biking events and the annual road bike race - the AmaShovaShova from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Inter provincial tournaments such as hockey at all levels occur frequently both in Hilton and in the city. No fewer than six golf courses within a 35 kilometre radius complete the picture.
The Midlands Meander begins its journey in Hilton. The Drakensberg Mountain range and its many attractions and resorts is only 1 ¼ hours away. Its World Heritage status is well known.
The town of Howick with the Howick Falls and Karkloof Falls as its main attractions, and the Umgeni Valley Game Ranch and the Karkloof Canopy Tours are added bonuses for the outdoor enthusiasts.
A short drive or walk in to the Village, and guests will find two shopping centres, with ATM'S, banks, supermarkets, take-aways, coffee shops, restaurants, a health shop, a CNA, video rental outlet, optician, Woolworths, post office and a mobile phone shop. Medical practitioners, chiropractors and health spas are also in the village. There is a fully equipped Gym where visitors can register while they are staying in Hilton.
Some of the finest schools in the province are in the vicinity; St Anne's DSG, Hilton College, Michaelhouse, Grace College, Cowan House, as well as the famed schools in Pietermaritzburg – Maritzburg College and Pietermaritzburg Girl's High School. They play host to many inter-school functions and Elbow's Rest is an ideal accommodation establishment to take in these features. The Cedara Agricultural College is only five minutes away.
Elbow's Rest is a three star TGCSA establishment, a member of the Msundusi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association and the Zulu Kingdom Tourism Authority. Your stay at Elbow's Rest is an assured pleasure for your hosts, and the Hilton village beckons as a secret gem of the province and as such, is reviewed in the international tourism feature ‘The Lonely Planet’ as a place of comfort where you can stay overnight and longer!
