In the heart of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands in South Africa, is the historical Caversham Mill. Caversham Mill Estate comprises the Caversham Mill Restaurant, Manor House and Country Cottages accommodation in a peaceful country setting overlooking the Lions and Impafana Rivers.
Self Catering Accommodation
Caversham Mill Manor:
Caversham Mill Manor is a beautiful, old yellowwood and stone house. It offers three unique and private suites for those who have a taste for accommodation of distinction. Two of the suites are double rooms, each with their own bathroom (bath and shower), and open onto their own deck areas. The third is a family suite, consisting of two bedrooms separated by a bathroom. Beds can be configured as either king size or two singles. Tea, coffee, sugar, milk and kettle are supplied and are topped up daily in each suite.
All suites are serviced on a daily basis. Guests have access to the common areas in the Manor: a casual TV lounge with log fireplace in close proximity to the open plan fully equipped kitchen (only used when the whole house is booked by one group) and dining area; a formal lounge, also with an antique log fireplace and a library. Outdoor deck and veranda areas are ideal relaxing and a braai with plenty of wood is supplied. The Manor opens onto a beautiful lawned garden with the Lions River flowing through it.
The Manor House can either be rented out as one self catering unit sleeping eight or as three individual suites (in which case people cannot self cater and can eat meals in the restaurant).
Caversham Mill Country Cottages offer self-catering accommodation in Victorian-style wood and iron cottages which date from the early 1900ís. There are four cottages which vary in size and sleep between two and six people depending on the cottage.
Each cottage has a log fireplace for warmth on a chilly winter's evening. There is a lounge with TV and dining room in each cottage. Fridge, freezer, microwave, stove and oven facilities are provided in each kitchen. Braai facilities are also provided and wood is supplied. Cottages are serviced daily. Linen is changed every 3rd day for long staying guests. Laundry facilities are available to those who wish to have their laundry done at a minimal charge.
Caversham Mill Estate is situated in splendid gardens, with direct access to the river frontage for fly fishing. The Lions River runs in a semicircle around the property and the Impafana River joins it at right angles in the front of the property. Pathways lead along pretty walks to the waters edge, where guests can fish, swim, tube along the river, or simply sit and enjoy nature at its best. For children there are swings, jungle gym and sandpit as well as a swimming pool for those hot summer days.
Caversham Mill Restaurant overlooks the Lions River waterfall and the historical site of the original Caversham Mill. It is a first class, well-priced establishment open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, teas and drinks. Dinner is served from Wednesday through to Saturday. There are also other eateries and pubs along the Midlands Meander waiting to be explored and experienced.
Activities and Attractions
Caversham Mill is a paradise for birdwatchers, from Orioles to Gymnogenes, and it is renowned for fly fishing, particularly Yellow Fish and Bass from October to March (bring your own rods.) Other sports in the nearby vicinity include hiking, horse riding, swimming (the Midmar Mile is an annual event), tubing, golf, polo, biking, hot air ballooning.
Caversham Mill is situated in the heart of the Midlands Meander, a 50km arts and craft route offering a large variety of beautiful hand made goods. Shop for gorgeous turned wooden bowls and boards, exquisite beadwork, jewellery and embroidered ware, ceramic pots of every shape and size, glassware and stained glass goods, lavender oils and soaps, leatherware - the list is endless.
The history of the area is fascinating for enthusiasts, and includes historical sites and anecdotes of Voortrekker, Bushmen / San, Boer and British significance.
