Amohela ho Spitskop Country Retreat & Conservancy is beautiful, exclusive and close enough to be easily accessible, but far enough to be remote, special and magical. Succumb to our large, comfortably furnished self catering cottages where we offer seldom found seclusion and privacy.
Rediscover your soul in the vast timelessness of the Highlands of the Eastern Free State. The 420 acre Retreat is nestled in a valley between the small rural farming villages of Ficksburg and Clocolan. The self catering cottages are beautifully positioned to enjoy the spectacular views that stretch to the majestic Maluti Mountain in the South-East.
The silence and beauty of our valley, with flocks of birds flying in great V formations to feeding grounds, the rasping noise of the Northern Korhaan, and far away the sound of a dog barking or a cow calling her calf to heal. The magnificent sunsets are followed by nights with stars that take your breath away.
This self catering cottage is so named after the many helmeted guinea fowl that wander the sanctuary that is Amohela ho Spitskop. Spacious and comfortably furnished, with big comfy couches, a huge open fire, a kitchen fully equipped with stove, microwave, family size fridge and a weber braai on the deck.
The double sized bedrooms are en-suite with pampering large bathrooms and are heated for chilly winters. The one bedroom has a king sized bed with beautiful percale linen, duvets made for cuddling, comfortably heated blankets for chilly weather. The room leads out through French doors onto the covered deck with views to take your breath away. The second double bedroom has single beds, heated blankets for chilly weather and opens onto the covered deck-with-a-view.
Five guests can be accommodated, the cottage is serviced daily and can be booked self catering or bed and breakfast. Ample safe parking is provided behind the cottage and free Wi-Fi is available at the main reception area.
This cottage is named after the yellow mongoose seen rooting for food close by. The self catering cottage has a large open plan living-dining area comfortably furnished with big couches, a huge open fire, fully equipped kitchen with family size fridge, stove, & microwave. Large French doors open onto a covered deck with weber braai and a lovely outdoor area.
Mongoose Cottage has three double bedrooms and two lovely big bathrooms. The main bedroom which is en-suite has a king size bed, beautiful percale linen, big cuddly duvets, pampering thick towels and heated blankets for chilly weather and leads out through French doors onto the "deck-with-a-view". The second bedroom has two three quarter beds, the third bedroom has a double bed and a single bed. These two bedrooms share a bathroom with shower, toilet and hand-basin. Bedrooms have heated blankets for chilly weather.
The cottage is serviced daily and guests booked into Mongoose Cottage are welcome to book for breakfast. Safe ample parking is provided behind the cottage and free Wi-Fi is available at the reception area.
Nguni Garden Bedroom:
Tucked away in the gardens at Dassie House which is secluded, private with beautiful Victorian bath and enclosed shower and toilet, queen size bed with percale linen, heated blankets and fire place for chilly Free State winters, own private garden area, as well as tea and coffee making facilities.
Accommodation on a Dinner Bed and Breakfast with scrumptious breakfasts and three course candle lit dinners. DSTV and Wi-Fi available at Dassie House. Serviced on a daily basis.
Cornwallis Garden Bedroom:
Tucked away in the gardens at Dassie House whick is secluded, private with enclosed shower and toilet, queen size bed, percale linen, heated blankets and fire place for chilly Free State winters and own private garden area as well as tea and coffee making facilities.
Accommodation on a Dinner Bed and Breakfast, with scrumptious breakfasts and three course candle lit dinners. DSTV and Wi-Fi available at Dassie House. Serviced on a daily basis.
This is the perfect place to take a deep breath and slow down the hectic pace of life. With walking trails laid out on the 420 acre Retreat, climbs into the stunning little mountain as well as a bird list of some 250 species, small mammals and amazing stars at night this is indeed a very special place.
Locally there are beautiful day drives, small and quaint villages to visit and good eateries in the village. There is also a golf course where visitors are welcome and game wander the greens.
San rock art and the luminosity of light attract both painters and photographers to this area. Guests are welcome to go cycling on the property or locally on safe scenic country roads. Each year in March there is a well-run mountain cycle race which spans over four days, combined with a cultural and vintage tractor show.
In the areas around Ficksburg and Clocolan it is Cherry Country and Ficksburg hosts the oldest crop festival in South Africa, The Cherry Festival which is held in November each year. With the proximity to the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho guests are welcome to take a day drive to the huge Katse dam or a visit to Afriski Ski Resort through the mountain passes and valleys which are of exquisite beauty.
