Amohela ho Spitskop, a 310ha privately owned Retreat, is nestled in a valley between Ficksburg and Clocolan, in the scenically stunning Eastern Highlands of the Free State.

Dassie Guest House, the original sandstone farmhouse, has been lovingly extended and restored, and spacious free standing sandstone garden bedrooms are tucked away in the beautiful gardens.

With stunning views over the Maluti Mountains, the three self catering cottages, built from beautiful local stone, are large, luxurious, & tastefully decorated. With huge open fires, big comfy couches, books magazines and views to die for, this is the perfect self catering getaway for the discerning guest seeking comfort & exclusivity.

The Estate offers fly fishing, walks, hikes, mountain cycle trails, small game, birding, beautiful stars and seclusion and privacy. Rediscover your soul in the vast space and timelessness of the Highlands, where magnificent sunrises and sunsets begin and end each day.

ACCOMMODATION

Garden bedrooms, built from sandstone, are tucked away in secluded areas of the rose filled garden. Each has bathroom en suite, queen or king size bed, percale linen, fluffy pure cotton winter sheets, heated blankets and combustion wood burning fires for chilly Free State winters.

Garden bedroom accommodation includes scrumptious breakfasts and candle lit dinners, served in our dining room or El Fresco on the large covered veranda, over looking the Spitskop Mountain.

Each free standing self catering cottage has a large open plan living area with well equipped kitchen, charming lounge and dining area and plenty of space and light. French doors lead onto a covered deck with magnificent views of the Maluti Mountains. Bedrooms and bathrooms are heated; each cottage has a weber braai and serviced daily.

However, for those guests who do not wish to self cater, Bed and Breakfast or Dinner Bed and Breakfast are also offered for guests booked into cottages,
Prior booking is essential.

There is a small intimate pub where guests gather before dinner, and DStv is available in the main lounge at Dassie House.

ACTIVITIES

Hikes and walks have been laid out on the 310ha, watch out for shy steenbuck. elusive rhebuck, dassies sunning on rocks, black harriers cruising the veldt and mongoose and meercat families out rooting for food.

Birding is excellent with those Free State “specials” chats and larks in abundance.
Blue and northern black korhaan are resident, secretary birds a frequent sighting. Large flocks of water fowl, waders and comical guinea fowl are seen daily on dams and in fields.

Day drives in the scenic beauty of the Eastern Highlands to local villages such as Rosendal and Clarens, and to Katse Dam and Afriski Ski Resort in the beautiful Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho (bring passports for Lesotho).

Fly Fishing
One still water of 2ha, three still waters of 1ha, and one still water of 5ha are well stocked with trout and black bass. We support catch and release, fly fishing and methods only, barbless flies, bring your own tackle.

Vintage Tractor Fair

Every year since 1989 a Vintage Tractor and Engine Fair has been held in Clocolan, in the scenic Eastern Free State Highlands.
