DIRECTIONS
From Johannesburg
There are two alternative routes to Kosi Bay coming from the direction of Johannesberg. The first is shorter in terms of distance, but the road has some potholes and is much more rural with many cows and people on the road. The second is longer in terms of distance, but won’t take much longer time-wise.
Either (1): Take the N2 past Ermelo and Piet Retief. After Lake Jozini turn left through Jozini town. Keep on that road following signs for Kosi Bay and Farazela border. The road has some potholes so be aware. Drive towards the southernmost border between South Africa and Mozambique, past KwaNgwanase. Just before you hit the border (about 10 minutes past the town) there is a graded (dirt) road to the right (the only one in the vicinity that is neither tar nor sand) with a sign post for Utshwayelo campsite. (If you hit the border you've gone too far, turn back less than a kilometre.) Follow that road for about 3.5 kms. There are some unmarked speed bumps along this road which are difficult to spot, so we recommend driving slowly. Amangwane is on the right (look for the sign).
Or (2): Take the N2 south as far as Hluhluwe, where you turn off and turn left on the R22. Come past Hluhluwe town and follow signs for Sodwana Bay. At the town of Mbazwana do not turn off to Sodwana Bay but follow signs for Kosi Bay and Farazela border. Drive towards the southernmost border between South Africa and Mozambique, past KwaNgwanase.
