Witsand Beach is an awesome spot for whale watching and this Blue Flag beach (2013) with the 4km stretch of incredibly white beach sand (hence the name) is a favourite holiday destination. The sand here is particularly white because underground water leaches the red iron oxide coating from the sand, leaving it with the crisp white finish.
Situated at the mouth of the Breede River you’ll find this beach packed over the December school holidays, this is also when you’ll find lifeguards on the beach. The beach is clean and well maintained and really a pleasure to relax on. The location also allows for a multitude of activities from fishing and boating to snorkelling and windsurfing. You’ll also be pleased to know that this is a safe swimming beach.
The whale watching is so special here and has been nicknamed South Africa’s whale nursery because it has one of the most magnificent land-based whale viewing points. The area is abundant with birdlife and plant life so while you’re exploring one of the many rock pools on the beach see what else you can find.
