Windmeul was named after the windmill built by a Paarl Miller, Mr Blake between 1184 and 1890 and was said to the only windmill in Agter Paarl and one of the finest with its shuttered sails and a fantail to turn the cap. After production ceased, one of the millstones is all that remains on a local school, but Windmeulís name remained as the wine cellar that opened in 1944. Twenty-three founding members of the Windmeul Co-Operative wine cellars was registered in 1944 and in two years later a 1700 crop of grapes was pressed.
Windmeul is planted to 1700 hectares of vineyards with a capacity of 14 500 tonnes of grapes. The cellar master is Danie Marais and Francois van Niekerk is the winemaker. With vineyards stretching across the Swartland valleys, Wellington, Agter-Paarl and even towards Durbanville, Windmeulís grapes are grown in various climates to create premium wines. Their modern cellar and tasting facility opened in 2006 and is wheelchair-friendly and boasts a great special event hall with views into the oldest parts of the cellar.
Enjoy traditional country warmth and hospitality and visit the Windmeul farmerís market on certain days which offer produce such as organic vegetables, vegetables, fruit, beef, lamb and mutton, chicken, pork, freshly baked bread, biltong, cheese, biscuits, cakes, free-range eggs, jams and preserves, olives and olive oil, bunch and braai-wood.
