Set in the foothills of Bainskloof, Welvanpas farm offers great trails, called Bains Mountain Bike Trails, but everyone else knows it simply as Welvanpas.
Where: Welvanpas Farm, next to Bainskloof Pass, just outside Wellington
Level: moderate to advanced; 15 – 29 km trails
Type of route: mainly single track winding through orchard, vineyard, waterfalls, fynbos and forest; fast downhills, uphills
Best: any time of year
The trails host the Cape Epic for the second time in 2015, which gives you an indication of their quality – stage five of the Epic follows the newly designed Black Route, including the Full Monty climb and the Cool Runnings sections (both of them), whilst stage six follows a mix of Wevanpas singletrack.
The four routes at Welvanpas Farm are easy to follow and well-marked:
Blue Route – 15 km, a moderate ride along jeep track and single track that includes rocky river crossings; it incorporates some of the White Route (without the challenging bits)
Yellow Route – 17 km, aimed at the more technical rider but also works for novices at a slower pace; expect rocky jeep track, river crossings, logging roads, and almost 8 km flowing single track to round it off
Black Route – 27 km, aimed at advanced riders; there are technical sections on this jeep track, single track with rocky sections route; great for summer rides (not much sun or wind)
White Route – 29 km, a more advanced, and technical ride with steep single track downhills (technical), steep and fast climbs, forest single track, and free-fall river crossings
Die Ou Meul coffee shop on the farm is worth a stop between rides, or after.
