Just 50 minutes from Cape Town, Wellington has been described as many things in its time, rustic, timeless, enchanting and even Tuscan. It is in these settings in the heart of Southern Africa's Boland that you will find the Welgegund Wine Estate. Family owned Welgegund is in an especially beautiful part of the land as its position at the foot of the Hawequa Mountain Range and oak-tree lined, cul de sac, entrance will attest to.
The Mediterranean philosophy that “wine is a way of life” has been embraced and celebrated by the vineyard and has led to over a decade of award-winning wines. It is said that the passion for the land and with which the wines have been crafted can be savoured in every bottle. Welgegund don’t just produce wines, they don’t just nurture vineyards and balance the scales with utter precision, and they live wine.
Welgegund has a firm footing in the history books, being established in 1795. Welgegund was even owned by Cecil John Rhodes until his death. The 35ha farm's Manor House is listed on the register of provincial heritage sites.
Cultivars grown on the estate include Cinsaut, Carignan, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Grenache Noir.
