The German couple, Evi and Georg Schlichtman, up and left their lives in Munich and after meeting a few good friends in the wine industry of South Africa, bought a farm on the slopes of the Dassenberg in Franschhoek. They named the farm Von Ortloff (for Evi’s family) which is a name which dates back from 1686 and has nobility status. They believe the name represents a blend of cultures and here on the estate, they have found their ideal lifestyle combining their love of wine and art.
The tasting venue boasts a beautiful art collection which ranges from an exhibition of wine bottles to items such as a gypsum newspaper vendor and the blue floor tiles in the cellar were painted by Clementina van der Walt. Evi restored and designed the new cellar in 1999 whilst the vinification activities were learnt the hard way. The first cultivars planted were Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and then Sauvignon Blanc against the slopes of the river. Seasonal labour is employed on the farm, while the rest is handled by the energetic couple themselves.
