Fairview has a view that is far fairer than fellow farms. Sitting pretty facing Table Mountain on the granite slopes of the Paarl Mountain this fair land has records of yielding its first wine in 1699... So it’s a fair guess the vines are settled.

Gazing over the sloping vineyards across the valley to the mountains in the distance one would never imagine that one were only a 45 minutes drive outside of Cape Town city and yet so immersed in green and sunshine. The label on Fairview's award winning wine collections including the cheekily named 'Goats do roam' range depicts a goat tower with roaming goats. This said label comes to life upon entering the estate and petting these now animated 'celebrity goats' at their stately tower. This 300 Hectare farm is the delight of both goats and grapes proudly bringing home achievement accolades for their milk and juice.

The tasting shed buzzes with friendly local and international tasters spoilt for choice in cheese, home-made goat’s milk products and wine. Everything is available for tasting (wine at a tasting fee) and available for purchase in both small and large quantities. Charles Backs, one of South Africa’s pre-eminent vintners brings joy to wine lovers in every wine tasting glass and bottle available in the tasting shed and at the restaurant, The Goat shed. Of course the goats, (all 600 of them) are surprisingly competitive for your tasting attention and the Cheesery charms you with array of goats and cows milk farm style cheese blends.

The Goat shed restaurant is a converted wine cellar with cosy indoor seating and outdoor terraces for alfresco dining lapping up the view over the lavender bushes and beyond.

This rustic setting is wonderfully relaxed holding 220 guests in a Mediterranean eatery style with clay tiles and wooden tables, chairs and benches. Freshly home baked breads and bagels are made with love especially to compliment the 25 cheeses on offer.

This happy bakery also sells speciality and traditional breads to accompany you home. All the bakers, waiters and wine stewards are previously disadvantaged Cape Winelands locals empowered by the Fairview employment program. Breakfast, lunches, light meals and cakes are delicious and who have thought at a wine farm that the coffee would be the best cup in Cape Town - I guess hanging out with those competitive goats makes you want to be the best at everything!
