More than 160 years after the Versailles farm was bought by Petrus Jacobus Malan, a great winemaking tradition continues. Six generations on, the Malan family still farms the land which stretches over 140 hectares.
You’ll find the farm in the heart of the scenic Wellington valley. Once Petrus bought the farm, little did he know that his son and grandson would make the Malan name synonymous with Wellington. 1863 saw the first train arrive in the sleepy town. Cleverly 'Oom Pieter' Malan agreed to lend the Versailles land for the extension of the railway and by ensuring that all trains stopped at Wellington station, local farmers experience a boom in business.
The farm yields excellent wines in the way of the Malan de Versailles collection and the easy-drinking Versailles range. 43 % of the farm is planted under vine including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chenin Blanc as well as pear trees covering eight hectares. ‘Oom Pieter’ helped established the South African Dried Fruit Association and their own fruit is dried in the old-fashioned way.
Their wines include a white Malan de Versailles - Shiraz 2005 and reds of Versailles - Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2009 and Malan de Versailles - Sauvignon Blanc 2009.
