Vendôme wine farm in the Paarl valley is well worth a visit. Grapes grown for wine have been produced since 1692 and the owners of the farm are the Le Roux family. The family’s original home in Mêr, Vendôme, Blois area in France led to the name Vendôme. As with many French Huguenots, the Le Roux brothers, Jean and Gabriel, fled France and settled in South Africa in 1688.
Jannie Le Roux is the owner and Jannie Junior 9, the 10th generation, produces the wine in the estate’s cellar. Their winemaking style is a classical one and wines are naturally fermented and matured in French oak barrels.
Vendôme produces the following wine varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon. Its Sans Barrique 2011 is an unwooded blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with Tropical flavours. The Merlot cab 2002 is made up of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s matured in French oak barrels for 12 months and has vanilla and light oak flavours. Its best enjoyed immediately. The Classique 2003 is a Blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc matured for 14 months with chocolate and fruit flavours.
