The Calitzdorp Spa is a year-round getaway for Karoo locals as well as for visitors from around the world. Nestled on the slopes of the mountains that characterise this part of the country, this spa is best known for the mineral-rich waters that have several healing and curative properties.

The spa pools receive the water directly from the source, the earth, where the water temperature is around 50 degrees Celsius. This is fed into the first pool, which is rather hot as a result. The second pool feeds from the first, and is a more comfortable temperature of around 36 to 38 degrees. The pools are large, with the slightly cooler pool being the largest. The minerals found in this dark-coloured water include high levels of manganese and iron, which have proven to distress and soothe tired bodies and minds. The waters are also healing for sprains, bruises, rheumatism and high blood pressure. Those with heart complications or other chronic illnesses should consult with a doctor before entering the hottest pool.

In addition to these, there is a massive cold-water swimming pool, as well as a shallow kiddies’ pool, all within the central pool area. Around these is a grassed picnic and sun-tanning area, making it a great place for families to come and spend the day. The views of the surrounding koppies and the looming mountains in the distance are picturesque.

Inside, the Roman bath averages 30 degrees Celsius, and is ideal for chilly winter days.

There are more than 70 recorded bird species here, as well as springbok, peacocks and leopard tortoises strolling around the spa’s grounds. These create a magical retreat from the distant memory of city life.

There are several hiking and walking trails that start at Calitzdorp Spa and take visitors into the surrounding mountains. Most of these are relatively quick and easy to complete.

Calitzdorp is close to a number of nearby activities and attractions. These include the Swartberg Pass and Swartberg Mountain Range, Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves and the breath-taking Meiringspoort Pass.
