About Tanzanite Wines
Growing up on Uitkyk farm in De Doorns, Melanie van der Merwe grew up with her parents who farmed export grapes. She learn to appreciate good wine and every Sunday Melanie and her brothers were treated with a small glass of ‘sweet wine’. She was only one of nine girls to study her BSc agriculture with Viticulture and Oenology at the time and worked her way up to work as Sparkling Wine Manager for Distell.
It was in Champagne, France where she really learnt the fine art of making Champagne. Now she is one of South Africa’s first sparkling wine specialists and believes that classical mehode champenoise wines cannot be replicated in South Africa given the vast difference in climate. She decided to name her wines Tanzanite as the gemstone is her birthstone and as all the same qualities of her wine. It is rare, highly sought after and even more classical than a diamond she believes. The Chardonnay and Pinot grapes used in Tanzanite wines come from rich lime soils in Stellenbosch, Rawsonville and Robertson. She has dedicated these wines to everyone around the globe who appreciates the finer things in life.
