The Swartland Co-operative was founded by 15 members and the Swartland Winery was established. When Jan van Riebeeck first saw the land and all its indigenous black vegetation ‘renosterbos’, he named the area ‘Swartland’ meaning ‘Black land’
This region suits the bushvine style vines perfectly and due to the many microclimates, a wide selection of wines can be cultivated. This winery approaches winemaking in a unique way by using dry soil and bush vine to create wines of excellent flavour. The wines are produced using smaller berries and can match every wine lovers taste and budget. This winery harvests 23 000 tons of grapes per annum and it’s land extends into the Malmesbury Hills for over 3600 hectares. There limited release wine is called Idelia and is a result of 60 years of Swartland’s winemaking experience and expertise.
