When the farm was purchased in 1980, the aim was to upgrade the infrastructure and replant noble cultivars on various slopes to suit each one ideally. The name ‘Sterhuis’ means ‘star house’ and originates from the 17th century when Capetonians mistook the farmhouse’s light high on the hill for the evening star of Venus.
The motto of Sterhuis is “there is no easy way from earth to the stars” and indicates the dedication and perseverance which has been necessary to develop this family estate. The cultivars of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have been planted including the bush vines of Chenin Blanc which have been around for over 33 vintages.
The owner and founder, Andre Kruger, believes that the wines’ quality is “as much as result of attitude as altitude”. His son, Johan Kruger is the winemaker and what started as a 112 hectare farm producing grapes for the market, morphed into a family-making wine affair after Johan joined the team. Enjoy the reds, whites and Methode Cap Classique.
