About Stellenzicht Vineyards

Barendt Hendrikse was the first owner of Stellenzicht in 1692 when it formed part of a larger farm named Rustenburg. At the time, Simon van der Stel had already given the rights of another farm named, Rustenburg to a family in Stellenbosch.

A single letter distinguished the two farms and a story is told of the two owners who drunk in a bar together and flipped a coin for the name. Rustenburg won and still exists today, whilst Stellenzicht was the new name chosen for the ‘loser’.

Nothing is lost here in the magnificent wine region on the Helderberg slopes where wine has been made for over 300 years. Hans-J Schreiber acquired the part of the farm in 1981 from the Bairnsfather-Cloete family and set about replanting all the vineyards. Stellenzicht took advantage of a new cellar and saw its wine appeal to both the old-school wine lovers and those who enjoy the more New World style.

Four year later he also purchased Neethlingshof. 1999 saw Hans form a new company, Lusan Holdings (Pty) Ltd with Distillers Corporation. The company overlooks seven farms of Le Bonheur, Uitkyk, Alto along with Stellenzicht, Neethlingshof, Olives and Hillandale. Shiraz was the wine which Stellenzicht pioneered, but its Syrah always draws a crowd and wine awards.
