This obscure landmark was created in 1963 using a bicycle lamp and other materials. He fixed it to halfway up Elandsberg Mountain as an indicator for water availability.
As the stream filled and flowed, the lamp would turn on so that Ladismith residents could see. The only problem was the bulb used needed replacing every 6 months, which required a hike up the mountain to replace it.
The light was modernized using a car generator to avoid this problem. Although you can see the light at its best from further away, it is a fascinating landmark to visit.
Take the hike that Stanley would take every six months and reach the foot of the lamp. The hike is just over 12 kilometers long and you climb 792 meters in height. It will take you a couple of hours to reach the lamp so it is advisable to take plenty of water with you.
