Tim Hamilton Russell first found the Hamilton Russell estate in 1975 after he left his position as a chairman of a top advertising company. He played a an active role in fighting for the rights and minimum wages for black workers as well as the abolition of the Dop system of paying wages in wine. It was the first wine estate in Walker Bay and began setting standards for many other wineries to follow.
They concentrated on growing and producing two varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 22 hectares of Pinot Noir are planted and 30 hectares of Chardonnay. Only two varieties are grown so they can concentrate on matching the unique terroir with these exact varieties. They have a second label named Southern Right which is comprised of a Pinotage and Chenin-based white.
Anthony Hamilton Russell bought the farm from his father in 1994 and together with winemaker Kevin Grant worked to produce the estate’s fine wines- wines which have a sense of place and really encompasses all the finest elements of the terroir. All soil was tested first to establish the very best positions to grow Hamilton Russell grapes on. Even the wine bottles are produced locally. Visit this estate in Walker Bay and experience their renowned varieties for yourself.
