Cape Town is known as Kaapstad in Afrikaans and endearingly teased to rhyme with 'Slaapstad' (Sleep Town) by other South African regions due to the general mood of lack of haste. Sleepy Hollow Horse Riding School, established in 1975, is the oldest equestrian school in the Noordehoek Valley and gives opportunity to explore why locals are in no hurry to see the end of a glorious Cape day.
Beach outrides are facilitated in groups no larger than 6, with guides leading hooves and humans among indigenous vegetation and fynbos, through wetland, among heaped sand dunes and along 8Km of pristine white wild beach. Long Beach skyline is silhouetted by steed and sea spray while sunshine and sunset laze on the horizon. Seagulls and birdlife challenge the breeze while surfers challenge the swell and dogs walk their owners.
This unspoilt horse trail accompanies the last stretch of the Atlantic Ocean hemmed by looming rock face and saddled with the view of Chapman's Peak. 'Back at the ranch' lessons are on offer for kids and adults coached by South African National Equestrian Federation (SANEF) qualified instructors. Training includes dressage, cross country, equitation, gymkana, showing and showjumping. Pony camps give little ones a live carousel ride and therapeutic rides assist the mentally and physically challenged with healing.
Beach outrides: Minimum age 14 years, maximum weight 95 Kg. Pony rides 30 minutes by booking, open daily from 09h0 to 16h00 for ages 2-12 years.
