The Cape is known for its fabulous wines, which have won a number of awards around the world. However, this part of South Africa also produces the ideal accompaniment to wines; award-winning cheeses. Simonsberg, originally established on the Schoongezicht Farm near Stellenbosch, offers cheese-lovers the perfect opportunity to get an insight into the cheese-making process and to sample some of the country’s best known and well-loved cheeses.
The Stellenbosch cheese farm was established in 1892. More followed about 100 years later in Bonnievale and Ladismith. Originally, the dairy milk was used to produce more conventional cheeses. Today, though, the range includes brie, camembert, blue cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, mature yellow cheeses and more.
The cheese makers of Simonsberg continue to be inspired by the top quality of the milk they use and by international trends. Visiting Simonsberg is fascinating, and gives cheese enthusiasts the opportunity to savour the many flavours amidst the gorgeous Western Cape scenery.
