Sheikh Yusuf Kramat is a sacred shrine worshipped and visited by many Muslim people. A Kramat or shrine is where the holy men of Islam or ‘Auliyah’ where laid to rest when they died. These men, many of them noblemen, were brought as prisoners from Arabia, India and Malaya to the Cape Colony by the Dutch settlers.
Many Kramats are known in the Cape but one in particular is worshipped by Muslim followers and visited as part of a pilgrimage to pay their respects...
Sheikh Yusuf was believed to be the father of Islam in South Africa and it is said that he and his family as well as many followers at the time were the first to read the Holy Qur’an and through this the first true Muslim community was created in South Africa.
His life and teachings are celebrated and there is much history to learn when visiting his shrine. The Sheikh Yusuf Kramat can be found in Faure and is open to all visitors regardless of religion.
