About Shannon Vineyards
Elgin has always been renowned for its great quality apples and pears and now it can add wine to its list of fine products. And this is where Shannon vineyards create their wines within the Kogelberg Biosphere between the vast mountains and Palmiet River.
The swirling design on their logo expressed the morning mist which rises each morning from the river. Shannon wines are produced from 12 difference blocks of Pinot Noir, 7 blocks of Sauvignon Blanc and half a hectare of Semillon. Mount Bullet comes from the Merlot vineyard. The name Shannon pays homage to their Irish ancestry. Their forefathers, the Shannon and Downes families came from Cork, Ireland. Each bottle produced on the farm has a strong sense of place. Together with the unique vineyard sites, the viticulture team of Kevin Watt and James Downes form a formidable partnership with winemakers, Gordon Johnson and Nadia Cilliers.
Shannon Vineyards is a member of the Biodiversity Wine Initiative and maintains virgin soil of natural fynbos between the vineyards. You can find their Big 5; Chacma Baboon, cape fox, Porcupine, Cape Clawless Otter and Black Sparrow Hawk as well as a Little 5 such as the Grysbok, Field Mice, Waxbill, Raucous Toad and Guinea Fowl.
