Once on Schalkenbosch Estate, you will find a lot more than just fine wines. This working farm of 2500 hectares produces grain, apricots, plums and 40 ha of grapes for wine production. There’s a race horse stud who calls it home and 300 beef cattle. And that sweet scent you’ll catch a whiff of? That would be the 2 ha of lavender planted for the production of essential oils for perfumes.
The Cape Dutch farm house has been declared a National Monument and dates back to 1792. The grapes are grown between 370m and 500 m above sea level and wine is produced mainly for export. The estate boats a whopping 22 dams all filled with bass and trout and supplies the Witzenberg Municipality with water.
The estate does not stop there; they have hopped on the social responsibility wagon and provide mentorship and land to 25 emerging farmers from previously disadvantaged communities. Their first bottled wine was a 2006 southern Rhone style wine made from Shiraz, Grenache, Mouverdre, Cinsaut and Viognier with a full body and only 2200 bottles were produced.
Whilst their Schalkenbosch Stratus wine has a label incorporating their status as a Champion Member of the Biodiversity in Wine initiative, their Schalkenbosch label is reserved for classic wines of superb quality. These wines are chosen from certain blocks of the vineyards produced as Bordeaux and Southern Rhone style wines to be kept under controlled conditions.
