Saronsberg can be found in the Upper Breede River Valley of the beautiful town of Tulbagh. Saronsberg is made up of two farms called Waveren and Welgegund. The farm formed part of the Twee Jonge Gezellen until it was divided between the two Krone brothers in the 1950’s. It was at this time that the farm was renamed after the mountain, Saronsberg, on whose slopes their vines now lay. A fire resulted in the Welgegund portion (known as ‘Die Erf’) being saved and a planting program began in 2003. Winemaker, Dewaldt Heyns, used this opportunity to use his vineyard experience he gained from a young age spent on his family’s Malmesbury farm.
The first Sauvignon Blanc grapes were harvested in 2004 and won many awards. Winemaker Dewaldt was awarded with membership to the Cape Wine Makers’ Guild. In 2009, the estate pressed its first vintage olive oil. The estate has exciting plans for the future which includes planting fruit and olive orchards and release commercial products.
The estate has three ranges: The Saronsberg Range - full-bodied, elegant wines; The Provenance Range - a more accessible range with lighter wines and The Nick & Forti’s Range - a collaboration between the Saronsberg Ranges, Dewaldt and Chef Fortunato Mazzone. Visit the avant-garde tasting room in the centre of the cellar and visit their fermentation cellar and traditional wood maturation cellar.
