Sample Wines at Meerendal Estate in Durbanville, Western Cape

Meerendal estate situated on the hills of Tygerberg was one of the first 14 farms in South Africa to be awarded the Wine Estate status in 1973 and also boasts the oldest existing Pinotage vineyards. The Starke family replaced the wheat fields with vineyards and bottled their first Meerendal Shiraz in 1969.

Taking advantage of this cool wine region, cellar master Liza Goodwin, produces noble varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinot Noir from hand tended vineyards. The farm produces two ranges, the Prestige range which includes Meerendal’s best and the Standard Range which is a new 2004 label. The Prestige range is produced in small quantities to include a white wine, two red wines, a natural sweet wine and a MCC whilst the Standard range has seven cultivar wines, a Rose and a blended red wine.

Meerendal strive to focus on both excellent food and wine and as a result serve elegant fruit driven wines well suited to the delicious cuisine which the chef conjures up. The barn once utilised for dairy farming, hosts many a dinner and special occasion. Join the Sunday buffet where wine is sold at cellar door prices and oven roasted carveries, starters, soups, salads and desserts are served.
