Saam Mountain Vineyards is a collective of forty South African growers with low producing vineyards all within the Paarl region until the Durbanville Hills. The Afrikaans word ‘saam’ means together and perfectly describes the heart of this winemaking process where everybody from the producer all the way until the distributor work together to bring the customer an offering of the best wine possible.
Eensaamheid Farm (meaning ‘place of solitude’) is the home of Saam Mountain Vineyard and its 1688 farmhouse is the oldest registered building in South Africa. Previous generations made their wine on this farm and recall it being sold from the cellar door. Today Pieter Carstens is the winemaker and uses a practise common in the Rhone where Pinotage is co-fermented with Viognier to add more colour and complexity to the wines. Original buildings are being restored as a wine cellar, tasting room and guest house for visitors.
When Christo Louw discovered Geometric Tortoises (on the UN Red List) on the farm, he created the first Provincial Nature Reserve for Tortoises in Africa. Sample SAAM Varietals such as SAAM Chenin Blanc, SAAM Sauvignon Blanc, SAAM Pinotage, SAAM Cabernet Sauvignon and SAAM Shiraz.
