Situated along the Breedekloof wine route is the Rico Suter wine estate. This is another estate which tells the tale of a family, in the case the Suters, who combine their talents to produce something magical. Rico, his viticulturist son Bruno, and Carlo the winemaker work together on the farm. Bruno and Carlo have always been conservationists and have set aside 10 hectares for conservation whilst 87 hectares have been cultivated.
Which leaves about 700 hectares of unfarmed land which they say will remain that way given their limited resources and large area. They welcome volunteers who will assist them in clearing the land of alien vegetation. There’s a promise of a wine tasting, bottle of wine and free cellar tour at the end.
Some wines you can look forward to tasting include their Cabernet Sauvignon Petit Verdot 2004 with its rich flavors of berries and a complexity of tannins, Pinotage 2005 with aromas of plums and cassis, Shiraz 2004 with smooth velvety round tannins and lingering aftertaste or the Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 with distinct flavors of berries, chocolate and vanilla.
