Situated in the picturesque Groenfontein Valley of the Klein Karoo’s famed wine-making town, Calitzdorp lays “an undiscovered vinous gem.” Peter Bayly Wines is easily located, thanks to their flying pig emblem emblazoned sign board, on a bend along a long and winding gravel road that’s carries you deeper and deeper into Groenfontein.

With the magnificent Swartberg Mountains as the back drop, the farm enjoys incredible natural beauty. Of the estates 7ha only 1.2 are under vine and therein lies the secret of their success, the Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and Souzao that have been chosen are meticulously cared for and find themselves rooted in rich ancient red soils. The Portuguese cultivars were selection with the sole intent to weave together the finest of Cape Ports and distinctive Klein Karoo red wines on the market.

The Baylys’ dream has been supported by the unique climate and position of the estate, with a large hillside perfectly positioned to shade the vineyard daily from 2pm and an unusual abundance of water as far into semi-arid territory as the farm is.
