Cape Town is a bustling metropolis, one of the world’s top tourist destinations, and the capital city of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. Added to this, it is also full of little treasures and precious finds like the Oranjezicht City Farm (or OZCF). This has been described as a non-profit, neighbourhood-run farm project in the heart of the Mother City, designed to provide organic produce for local residents.

But, the Oranjezicht City Farm is actually so much more. Since its inception, it has used its convenient locale and its agricultural value to bring folks together, provide food, educate and entertain. It is the local residents that invest their time and energy into this initiative, and these ones are a delight to meet and learn from.

Volunteers conduct guided tours through the farm to allow visitors to be part of the exciting projects underway, see the agriculture in action, and interact with those whose passions are so invested in the Oranjezicht City Farm. These ones will also let visitors know how they can get involved – whether they want to get their hands ‘dirty’ (that is; help in a practical, hands-on way) or are able to help financially. Guided tours are done on a donations basis. An average of between R30 and R50 per head is usually given. If you would prefer the guide to focus on one or two specific subject matters, this can be requested when booking your tour or school outing.

However, for those who would prefer to amble around the farm sans the help of a guide, you are invited to do so. In addition, dogs on leads are also welcome here.

School children, tourists and locals get to learn so much, as well as to have convenient access to fresh, organic fruit, vegetables and other produce. The produce tastes better, is free of harmful chemicals, and is part of an improved food system that simultaneously uplifts the community and cares for the environment.
