During the 70’s when winemakers were creating tradition of premium wine making in South Africa, Dave and Felicity (née Newton) Johnson joined the industry. Dave became one of SA’s first Cape Wine masters and played a pertinent role in exporting many of the country’s wines overseas once the nation was permitted to be a part of international markets again.
He started his own brand of wine named Cape Bay which prompted him to open a cellar. They decided to move to Hermanus in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and together with their sons, Newton Jonson wine was birthed.
Their son Gordon is the winemaker whilst Bevan is the managing director of the estate and in conjunction with their creative wives who work on the graphic design and marketing, this family work wonders with this estate and its wines. You’ve got to wonder just how great the food must be at their ‘Heaven Restaurant’. With a name like that and their patron chef, Stefan Louw, in command of the kitchen, your meals are bound to be memorable along with the views of Babelonstoring Mountains, Botriver Lagoon and the Hangklip Mountain in the distance.
