Morgenster is a 300 year old estate which once formed part of Vergelegen. It was first purchased by French Huguenot, Jacques Malan. He named the farm and 14 years later passed it down to his son Daniel who had 13 children. The wine cellar, farm house and outbuildings were all passed down to his son Jacobus in 1711. The estate boasts one of the greatest examples of the holbol gable and also added six Cape Dutch gables to its architecture. The morning star from the homestead’s front gable is now the logo of the estate. In 1991, Giulio Bertrand bought the farm and together with architect Revel Fox, he renovated Morgenster. Red grape varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc can be found here.
The estate released its flagship wine, the Morgenster 2001 in 2004. The fourth vintage of the Lourens River Valley 2001 was released in 2003. Their extra virgin olive oil has been chosen as one of the Top 15 olive oils in the world. Olive Business in Sydney has voted the olive oil as the best in the Southern Hemisphere. The Restaurant, Sofia’s, was named after Sofia Loren by Morgenster’s owner. Chef Craig Cormack will wow you with dishes served on the terrace overlooking the vineyards, olive groves and cellar. He uses herbs, salads, lemons and green figs from the estate.
