Mooiplaas means ‘beautiful farm’ and is located on the northern slopes of the Bottelary Hills.
The court’s messenger, Christoffel Haazewinkel purchased the Hazendal farm which Mooiplaas was originally part of. As a stand-alone farm, Mooiplaas was owned by Jan Christoffel Bosman and in 1963 Nicolaas Roos took over along with his sons at a later stage. Wine production then commenced and was sold to wholesale merchants. The first wine bottled under the Mooiplaas label was the Cabernet Sauvignon 1995. There are four wines in the Mooiplaas range including the Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
The gable of the Cape Dutch homestead reads 1833 and in 1989 it was declared a National Monument. The Mooiplaas was started to protect endangered Renosterveld Fynbos which has medicinal values and forms part of the natural habitat of many animals. If you enjoy a warm, family atmosphere then pop into Mooiplaas where the tasting room was once a stable, the olives are home-grown and bottled from 32-year old olive trees and it has real farm feel.
Seasonally, the Roos family host ’Langtafel’ (Long Table) luncheons in the Old Manor House. You can enjoy Mooiplaas wines and savour the organic and local ingredients which Dirk uses in his dishes.
