Perched on the famous Route 62 through exquisite inland portions of South Africa, Montagu is a small town with big character. It is nestled amongst the craggy mountains of the Klein Karoo, just 180 kilometres from Cape Town, South Africa’s Mother City. It is within these charming surrounds that the Montagu Bookshop is situated.

This inviting haven of literature is an excellent retreat for travellers that are on the lookout for an escape from the real world or who want to immerse themselves in adventure, art, architecture, culture, history, cooking, and more. There are fact and fiction options, as well as an array of second-hand books to keep avid readers or those that just want to lie back and enjoy a literary escape busy for days.

There are English and Afrikaans books, as well as a small selection of European languages (including German, French and Dutch). The range of children’s books is great, and there are even some collectible items buried in the recesses of the Montagu Bookshop.

The bookshop’s entrance continues to be part of its delight; as it is decorated in a collage of pages from old books, celebrating the magic that a novel can hold in the leaves between the covers.

This bookshop is conveniently located in Bath Street, just opposite the popular Montagu Country Hotel, which is renowned for its trendy Art Deco style. It is accessible for readers in wheelchairs and there are comfy seats for those who want to take their time. The Montagu Bookshop also has a stall at The Market on Saturdays from 08h00 to 12h30.

Slightly further afield, Montagu is renowned for its hot mineral springs and for the many walking and hiking trails that wind their way through the surrounding mountains. It is a particularly pretty destination that invites visitors from all over the world to drink in the gorgeous views.
