Tulbagh originated as a small white wine producing region. After the earthquake levelled the town and it was rebuilt, Dave Manley Jordan arrived in 1999 with other local producers and planted red wine grapes. Tulbagh is well respected as a boutique region with some of the finest red wines around.
Tulbagh local, Stefan Hartmann, took over as head winemaker from Dave. He grew up with a father who farmed in the area and as a result was always surrounded by grapes. He studied viticulture and gained experienced at Meerlust and Delheim estates as well as France and Switzerland. He loves being able to “take materials from Mother Nature and turn it into something enjoyable.”
Manley grow under 7ha of vines which is small but produced with love. 35 000 - 40 000 bottles of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Merlot and a Semillon / Sauvignon Blanc blend are produced annually. Manley believe some of their secret lies in hand nurturing the vines themselves, well drained soil, and hand picking at night, cold soaking and efficiently de-stemming. Their Thatch House Red is a Shiraz based blend named after the 19th century thatched Manor house on the farm. They aim to make wine which can be easily enjoyed and use every vintage to build on the quality of the last.
