About Laibach Vineyards

The motto of Laibach of, “Treat every vine, every bunch and every berry with absolute affection and you will get the best wine, most reflected of your terroir” should tell you a lot about the wine you can find at Laibach and the people who make it happen.

Dr Petra Laibach-Kuehner visited South Africa in 1994 and after falling in love with our country, bought the farm on behalf of her late father. As a physician and biologist she is responsible of converting the farm to organic farming practices. Michael and Anella Malherb tend to the vines lovingly and ensure that the daily running of the farm goes smoothly.

The estate’s brand is called Ladybird which is a Bordeaux-style red blend with a label depicting a red capsule with black dots like a ladybird. It was first made in 2003 and the Ladybird Red and Ladybird White (blend of Chardonnay, Chenin and Viognier) have both been rated with four stars in the 2011 John Platter wine guide and make up half of Laibach’ s total production.

By 2012, all 42 hectares under vineyard will be organic by 2012 and grown without herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilisers from the groundwater supplies, surface, soil and atmosphere and in the wine. Laibach makes an organic Merlot exclusively for Woolworths.
