About Klein Gustrow Estate

110 years ago, a father divided his farmland between his two sons. He drew the link from the Jonkershoek valley road, through the Cape Dutch homestead and right up the hill. Klein Gustrow is one half and is owned by Chris and Athalie McDonald.

About 300 or more Cape Dutch houses still exist in South Africa and the McDonald home may be the only semi-detached one. The McDonalds bought the farm in 1987 after looking at 40 various properties.

Chris first just began growing grapes for three years. But once he realised he wanted to make his own wine, he began replanting Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. He used second-hand equipment and spends most of his money buying new French oak each year. Their yield is no limited to 7 tonnes per hectare. 100 tonnes goes to the Stellenbosch Farmers winery whilst 21 tonnes goes to their own winery. They have a Sauvignon Blanc and Reserve Range available.
