The magnificent Bloubergstrand is one of Cape Town’s many spectacular beaches, thanks to its long sandy stretches and the unrivalled postcard-perfect backdrop of Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Devil’s Peak, and Signal Hill. However, it offers something even more exciting and fun than the run-of-the-mill swimming and tanning. This is one of the most popular kite surfing hotspots in South Africa. World-renowned kite surfer, Andries Fourie, has taken full advantage of this excellent positioning by opening Kitesurfschool in Cape Town.
Andries competed in the red Bull King of the Air event, is an international Cabrinha team rider, and worked as a kite surfing IKO level 2 instructor for a decade before opening this school, putting him in the perfect position to impart his knowledge, skills and experience to kiting beginners and pros alike. Fuelled by passion and spurred on by the growing popularity of this sport, Andries ensures that everyone visiting the Western Cape Province has an opportunity to learn kite surfing.
Those who want a taste of this sport, which is gaining acclaim all over the world, can enjoy beginner lessons, which take into account tides, wind and kiting techniques. Those who have kited before are able to have refresher, intermediate or advanced courses, making this school a resource for the whole family, or groups of friends with differing levels of kite surfing skills. In addition, Kitesurfschool offers advanced bar and kite setup lessons, downwind lessons, beach assistance and day trips to Langebaan.
Until now, kite surfing has been seen as an adventure sport for those wanting an adrenalin rush. While there certainly is a lot of excitement around it, though, this school demonstrates how kiting can be enjoyed by people of almost all ages and abilities.
Cape Town has excellent conditions for kite surfing, particularly in the summer months. The Kitesurfschool operates seven days a week and lessons need to be arranged prior to arrival.
