Travellers that have booked accommodation in Cape Town are almost certainly going to have Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens on their itinerary. It is a spectacularly pretty area that boasts an incredible variety of plant species, perched peacefully on the slopes of Table Mountain. And, in 2019, its gift shop got a revamp and upgrade; now touting itself as the most beautiful gift shop on the continent.

The Kirstenbosch Gift Shop has a tasteful collection of products from South African artists, crafters and designers. In their ongoing dedication to showcasing local talent, more than 85% of the goods on offer here are locally sourced. Visitors can look forward to exploring the wide variety and great quality on offer here. Some of the products include clothing, accessories, edible gifts, African souvenirs, gorgeous home ware, bath and body products, and printed fabrics.

Local ceramic artists like Hennie Meyer, Lisa Firer, Gemma Orkin, Potterseed and Dragana are showcased here. Therev are also stunning resin fynbos drops by Daya Heller, printed textiles from Sharon Boonzaier and Ardmore, and botanical print raincoats by Rosehip. Of course, this is only scratching the surface of all of the exciting little finds at the Kirstenbosch Gift Shop.

The focus has been to source an array of merchandise that speaks of the South African experience and celebrates its Cape Floral heritage. But, more than the merchandise, this celebration has been accomplished through the tasteful design of the shop too; creating a space where visitors and locals can discover the gems that are so specially and uniquely South African. One of the main features of the revamped store is the virtual tree canopy, which has been accomplished by cutting leaf shapes into a shaded covering for a spectacular result.

From the shop, head into the gardens for an exceptional outdoors experience. Table Mountain’s cableway and the V & A Waterfront are only 20 to 25 minutes away.

The shop is open every day between 09h00 and 18h00 in winter and from 09h00 to 19h00 in summer. There is a free gift-wrapping service and a 10% discount to members of the Botanical Society.
