Drink in the exquisite southern Overberg of the Western Cape when Africasunroad Tourism takes you on the hike of a lifetime. The Whale Trail Hike is in the gorgeous De Hoop Nature Reserve, just three hours’ drive from Cape Town.
Africansunroad covers the 56 kilometre trail over five days, making it manageable and ensuring that hikers do not miss out on the scenery and tranquillity. The landscapes are breath-taking, with so much diversity that hikers may be tempted to stay here and never return to the ‘real world’. There is an array of natural wonders; from caves, middens (ancient heaps of shells and other materials), and calcified dunes to blowholes and calcrete (or caliche) formations. The unspoiled beaches stretch on for miles, while the mountains are blanketed by the beautiful fynbos for which so many parts of the Western Cape are known. Hikers will smell the heady bouquet, feel the soft grasses and scrub as they brush their legs, and bask in the warmth of the sunshine as they traverse some of the prettiest countryside in South Africa.
The fauna in the De Hoop Nature Reserve is also impressive. This is one of the most important bird-watching hotspots in the country, with more than 260 recorded species. One of the features is the breeding colony of the Cape vulture, which hikers will see on the first day of the adventure. Other animals that may make their appearance include the grey rhebuck, ostrich, bontebok, mongoose, plenty of slow and steady tortoises, as well as dolphins and seals. During the latter half of the year, the southern right whales can often be seen skirting the coast.
There are five overnight stops in comfy huts along the way. A maximum number of 12 people are permitted, and these will be the only ones along the trail at any given time; making this a time of utter serenity. The experience and insight of the qualified guide adds immeasurable value to the experience, as he points out fascinating details and gorgeous sights.
