Within the Sondagskloof wine ward is where you’ll Hermanuspietersfontein Wines owned by Johan and Mariëtte Pretorius. The farm falls within a winter rainfall region and south-easterly summer wines. The annual rainfall is 650mm per annum.
The soils of shale and granite provide a great canvass for grapes and fauna to flourish and grow.
Animals such as leopards, reebok, duikers and baboons can be found on the farm. Barthi Eksteen is the farm’s winemaker and using the modern cellar and best quality grapes to make these promising wines.
Each variety is planted in a different position on the slopes. The westerly slopes have Bordeaux cultivars of Cabernet Sauvignon (9.73 hectares), Merlot (6.78 hectares), Cabernet Franc( 3.96 hectares), Malbec, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon blanc (27.44 hectares) and Semillon (2.64 hectares). The Easterly slopes do wonders for Rhone cultivars of Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Viognier. Come harvest, grapes are hand-picked and preserved until it’s ready for crushing. The end result being beautiful wines.
